Background of the Study
Political godfatherism, characterized by the patron-client relationships between influential political figures and emerging politicians, has significantly shaped local government administration in many parts of Nigeria. In Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, godfatherism has been a prominent feature influencing political appointments and policy directions. This system, while sometimes offering stability and continuity, often compromises meritocracy and fosters corruption (Ade, 2023). Scholars argue that the reliance on godfathers can hinder transparent governance and stifle genuine democratic participation (Okafor, 2024). Recent studies have highlighted how such practices affect administrative efficiency and public trust, calling for a critical examination of their impact on local governance structures (Chukwu, 2025). This study aims to appraise the role of political godfatherism by evaluating its effects on decision-making processes, resource allocation, and overall administrative performance in Uyo. Through qualitative and quantitative analyses, the research will provide a comprehensive understanding of how entrenched patronage networks shape local government outcomes and propose recommendations for reforming these practices to foster more accountable governance.

Statement of the Problem
In Uyo, political godfatherism presents a significant challenge to achieving transparent and efficient local government administration. The undue influence of godfathers has led to biased appointments, mismanagement of resources, and limited public participation in governance processes. This entrenched practice undermines the ideals of meritocracy and accountability, raising concerns about the overall effectiveness of local governance. The study seeks to address these issues by critically evaluating how godfatherism affects administrative performance and the delivery of public services (Ade, 2023; Okafor, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the influence of political godfatherism on administrative practices in Uyo.

  • To identify the adverse effects of patronage networks on governance.

  • To propose reforms aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability.

Research Questions:

  • How does political godfatherism affect local government administration in Uyo?

  • What are the key challenges posed by patronage networks in governance?

  • What reforms can mitigate the negative impact of godfatherism?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Political godfatherism negatively impacts the efficiency of local government administration.

  • H2: The prevalence of patronage networks reduces transparency in decision-making.

  • H3: Implementing merit-based reforms improves administrative accountability.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the critical influence of political godfatherism on local government administration. By identifying its adverse effects and proposing evidence-based reforms, the research aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and public trust in governance. The findings will be valuable for policymakers seeking to dismantle entrenched patronage systems (Ade, 2023; Chukwu, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to an investigation of the role of political godfatherism in shaping local government administration in Uyo Local Government Area, with a focus on patronage practices and administrative outcomes.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Political Godfatherism: The practice of influential political figures using patronage to secure loyalty and control appointments.

  • Patronage Networks: Informal systems of support based on personal relationships rather than merit.

  • Local Government Administration: The management and implementation of policies by municipal authorities.
